Baili Rhododendron in Bijie, Guizhou: The Most Magnificent Natural Garden on Earth
When the spring breeze arrives in Guizhou, a one-of-a-kind feast of colors unfolds. The primeval rhododendron forest, stretching across 125.8 square kilometers, transforms the entire mountain range into a brilliant sea of flowers from late March to early April each year. This is not the result of human cultivation, but a masterpiece shaped by nature over millions of years.
A Wonder of the World
The Baili Rhododendron Scenic Area lies on the border between Dafang County and Qianxi City in Bijie. It stretches in a crescent shape, 1 to 3 kilometers wide and extending for more than 50 kilometers. It is the world’s largest, most diverse, and best-preserved belt of primeval rhododendron forest, and is known as the ‘Garden of the World.
Baili Rhododendron is home to four of the five subgenera of rhododendrons, with over 40 species, representing the vast majority of rhododendron subgenera in the world. Most astonishingly, a single rhododendron tree can bear flowers of several different colors—up to seven—entirely as a natural phenomenon.
Here, ancient rhododendron trees over a hundred years old can be seen everywhere. At the top of the hill in Dujuan Village, Jamu Management Area, stands the ‘King of Rhododendrons,’ over 1,200 years old. Its trunk measures about 80 centimeters in diameter, its height spans several meters, and its crown is densely covered with blossoms.
Two Core Scenic Areas
The Baili Rhododendron Scenic Area is mainly divided into two core areas—Jinpo and Pudi—each with its own unique charm.
Jinpo Scenic Area: A Magnificent Canvas of Blossoms
Jinpo Scenic Area is regarded by many visitors as the most beautiful place to enjoy the flowers. Here, the rhododendrons grow along the mountainsides, displaying a rich and vibrant array of colors.
The Soma Flower Bridge, spanning the canyon, is the most popular photo spot in Jinpo. On both sides of the bridge, the cliffs and valley floor are covered with rhododendrons, making walking across it feel like strolling through a painting.
At Baihua Ping, the diversity of rhododendron species is at its peak, and when in bloom, the flowers create a dazzling display of colors. Wanhua Tower is the perfect spot for a panoramic view; from the top, as far as the eye can see, a sea of flowers stretches out.
Mayinglin is the area with the highest concentration of Rhododendron mayingense. Its flowers are a fiery red, the trees are tall, and the crowns are dense, with as many as two or three hundred blossoms, forming a veritable sea of red.
Pudi Scenic Area: A Poetic Realm Shrouded in Mist and Clouds
Compared with the grandeur of Jinpo, Pudi Scenic Area exudes a sense of serenity and remoteness. Here, the sea of flowers is veiled in mist and clouds, creating a hazy beauty, like a three-dimensional ink painting.
Wucai Road is the core attraction of Pudi, flanked by a rich variety of rhododendron species. During peak bloom, the interplay of blossoming and falling flowers creates a breathtaking spectacle.
Shuhua Peak is the highest point in Pudi and the best spot for flower viewing. From the summit, all the rhododendron-covered peaks unfold before your eyes.
Blooming Season of Baili Rhododendrons
The entire flowering season can be divided into three stages:

| Late Bloom | Mid April – Early May | Some late-blooming species continue to flower. The Jamu Scenic Area, with its abundance of alpine rhododendrons, blooms slightly later, making it ideal for off-peak visits. |
Immersive Activity Experience
Besides enjoying the flowers, you can also appreciate or take part in a variety of cultural activities.
During the Baili Rhododendron Flower Festival, the most iconic event is the intangible cultural heritage ceremony of ‘Flower God Worship,’ which centers on Yi traditional culture. Every year in late March or early April, Yi men and women dressed in festive attire gather at Baihuaping in the Jinpo Scenic Area to reenact a centuries-old blessing tradition through solemn rituals such as welcoming the Flower God, inviting the Flower God, and dancing for the Flower God.
‘The Flower Fairy Parade,’ an interactive experience running throughout the season, can be unexpectedly encountered by visitors along Shuhua Peak in Pudi Scenic Area and throughout Jinpo Scenic Area. The Flower Fairies sing and dance, inviting visitors to join in the celebration.
The nighttime experiences in the scenic area are especially spectacular, with intangible cultural heritage performances such as ‘Da Tie Hua’ (iron flower display) and ‘Fire Pot Show’ taking turns to amaze the audience. Molten iron strikes create tens of thousands of sparks, and the Fire Pot dance produces streams of colorful light, offering an immersive full-day experience of ‘flower viewing by day and intangible cultural heritage by night.’
