Our first stop is the crown jewel of Lingnan architecture – Chen Clan Ancestral Hall. Step inside and be instantly struck by the famed “Three Masterpieces of Lingnan Art”: intricately carved wood, vivid brick reliefs and brilliantly glazed ceramic sculptures. Every roof ridge, screen and doorway tells a story of myth, folklore and auspicious symbolism. More than a clan hall, this is an open-air encyclopedia of traditional craftsmanship. A short walk takes us from Chen Clan Ancestral Hall to everyday poetry at Lychee Bay. Here, you’re free to explore at your own pace – wander along the waterways, spot traditional tong-lau houses, blue-brick lanes and small arched bridges, and feel the rhythm of old Guangzhou’s water-based way of life. This evening, we dine like the locals at a much-loved Cantonese dai pai dong. Don’t expect fancy plating – this is all about bold flavours and irresistible wok hei (that smoky “breath of the wok”). Dishes like spring-onion chicken and soy-sauce stir-fried goose tripe showcase the honest, down-to-earth tastes that define Guangzhou’s street-food soul.

Today, we spend a full day tracing Guangzhou’s complete evolution as a “thousand-year trading city.” Our journey begins at the Thirteen Hongs Museum, the heart of the former Thirteen Hongs district – the Qing dynasty’s only officially sanctioned foreign trade zone. Inside, you’ll come face to face with the luxury goods that once captivated European elites: Canton enamel porcelain, ivory fans and other prized exports that were the hard currency of global trade. Next, we take a stroll along Yanjiang West Road, often called the “financial street of Republican-era China.” This riverside promenade stands as a physical monument to Guangzhou’s leap from feudal trading port to modern metropolis. Landmark buildings such as the old Customs House, post office and bank headquarters line the route, each stone etched with the ambition and elegance of the 1920s and 1930s. At lunchtime, there’s no better place to slow things down than Guangzhou Restaurant. Sit down for a classic Cantonese dim sum experience, and do as the locals do: linger for a couple of hours, sipping tea and savouring the philosophy of unhurried living. In the afternoon, we head to Shamian Island. This small island in the Pearl River was once home to foreign trading houses and banks during the colonial era. Today, its tranquil European-style architecture feels worlds away from the city bustle, quietly reflecting a complex history of semi-colonial commerce. We finish the day in the most classic way possible – by water. From the old city wharf, hop on a river ferry bound for the new city. As the boat cuts through the water, watch the skyline transform from traditional arcaded buildings to soaring skyscrapers in a matter of moments. 

Start your morning with a local breakfast – any congee shop, noodle house, or tea café packed with locals will do. Afterward, wander freely: explore a lively wet market, a tree-lined old street, or a quirky café. The true spirit of Guangzhou is found in these spontaneous, everyday moments. Save a spot for lunch at Bingsheng, a Michelin-recommended Cantonese restaurant. More than just a meal, it’s a temple of modern Cantonese culinary artistry. Start with the “secret black char siu,” perfectly balanced between fat and lean and melting in your mouth, followed by the “crispy pineapple bun,” delicate, flaky, and layered like fine paper. In the afternoon, head to Huacheng Square, the beating heart of modern Guangzhou. Step into the Guangdong Museum, shaped like a giant lacquered box. Inside, it’s a treasure trove of Lingnan history, and its awe-inspiring dinosaur skeletons and dazzling gem collections are a visual spectacle in themselves. Outside the museum, you’ll find yourself in an open-air gallery of contemporary architecture. Today, we take a journey through time, from a thousand-year-old port to a wave of regional flavors. In the morning, we head to Huangpu Ancient Port – even older than the Thirteen Hongs. This was the first imperial-era Chinese port to embrace the world, a living relic of the Maritime Silk Road. Stroll along the blue-stone streets, and you might stumble upon the historic Haibang Street or the Yuehai First Pass Museum, silent witnesses to centuries of trade and ambition. Don’t miss a bowl of freshly made ginger milk pudding, where spicy ginger meets creamy milk in a delicate collision on your tongue. At lunchtime, we step into a traditional Chaoshan restaurant, facing a dazzling seafood display and open kitchen. Try a dish famously known as “Chaoshan poison” – raw-marinated shrimp and crab – where icy, silky freshness hits your palate straight to the soul. Or savor a piece of tender, melt-in-your-mouth braised goose liver, a showcase of Chaoshan masterful braising techniques.
