Retracing China’s Ancient Silk Road: Traversing Ancient Wonders and Diverse Cultures from Xi’an to the Pamirs

Ni hao! Welcome to China. Your adventure begins in the historic city of Xi’an, the eastern gateway of the ancient Silk Road. Upon arrival, you’ll be met by your local leader and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax or explore the surrounding streets at your own pace. At 2:00 pm, you’ll meet your group and leader for a welcome meeting, where you’ll learn more about the journey ahead and receive essential travel tips. Next, we’ll climb Xi’an City Wall and stroll along this monumental relic that has witnessed the rise and fall of thirteen dynasties. As you walk along its stone ramparts, feel the centuries-old bricks beneath your hands and take in a skyline where modern high-rises meet ancient rooftops — a striking collision of past and present. In the evening, we head to the bustling Muslim Quarter, where the air is rich with spices and the scent of street food, inviting you on a mouthwatering journey through a thousand years of culinary history.

Today, we set out on a powerful journey that spans more than 2,000 years, diving deep into the military might and ambition of the Qin Empire. This morning, we visit the legendary Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum Museum, often called the Eighth Wonder of the World. Stepping into Pit 1 is an unforgettable moment – ranks of warriors stand frozen in formation, their silent presence almost overwhelming. Look closely and you’ll notice no two figures are the same: each face, hairstyle and suit of armour is unique. This isn’t just an archaeological site – it’s a window into the vision and determination behind China’s first unified empire. Our local guide will bring the story to life, revealing the history, secrets and extraordinary discoveries behind the Terracotta Army. In the afternoon, we travel just 10 kilometres to Huaqing Palace, where the atmosphere shifts from imperial power to Tang Dynasty elegance. Here, amid tranquil gardens and historic hot springs, it’s easy to imagine the refined and indulgent life of the Tang court. This evening, you may choose to attend one of China’s most spectacular outdoor performances, The Song of Everlasting Sorrow. As Mount Li is illuminated and mist rises from the hot springs, the legendary love story unfolds across the landscape itself – a moving, immersive experience that lingers long after the final scene. 

Before travelling on to Jiayuguan, we’ll visit the Sanxingdui Museum — one of China’s most renowned museums and an excellent window into the country’s rich and layered past. Housing one of the country’s densest collections of cultural treasures, it offers a fascinating window into the civilizations that once flourished in China’s ancient capitals. Among the highlights are exquisite Tang-dynasty artefacts, including a finely carved agate rhyton shaped like a mythical beast and rare imperial jade seals once used by royal consorts. Together, these masterpieces bring the power, artistry and sophistication of early China vividly to life. At around 11am, we’ll head to the airport for our flight to Jiayuguan. On arrival, your local guide will meet you and assist with the hotel check-in, leaving the evening free for you to relax or explore at your own pace.  In the evening, consider visiting the lively Datang Food Street, where you can sample a range of local dishes and soak up the evening atmosphere.

Today we’ll explore the mighty Jiayuguan Pass — one of the most complete and formidable ancient military defence systems in China. Far more than a single gate, the fortress is a layered stronghold of inner walls, barbicans, outer ramparts and defensive moats, built to protect the western edge of the empire. Climb up to Guanghua Tower, where panoramic views unfold — from the snow-capped peaks of the Qilian Mountains in the distance to the vast, windswept Gobi Desert stretching endlessly beyond. In the afternoon, visit the dramatic Overhanging Great Wall, a striking section constructed along a steep mountain ridge at an almost 45-degree incline. Appearing to hang in mid-air as it climbs the slope, this gravity-defying stretch offers a powerful sense of the Wall’s scale and the ingenuity behind its construction. As evening approaches, return to the fortress to witness sunset at Jiayuguan. Watch as the fading light washes the ancient walls in warm gold and deep amber, casting long shadows across the desert and bringing the fortress to life in one of its most photogenic moments. 

In the morning, we’ll visit the Wei Jin Art Gallery, where breathtaking mural paintings from Wei and Jin dynasty tombs offer a vivid glimpse into life nearly two millennia ago. Often described as the world’s largest underground art gallery, this remarkable site preserves more than 1,400 ancient tombs dating back to the Wei and Jin dynasties (220–420 CE). Step inside to discover vivid brick-wall murals depicting everyday life, ceremonies and beliefs from a time when this region sat at the crossroads of cultures. Later, settle in for a scenic road journey of around five hours as you travel from Jiayuguan to Dunhuang, once a vital stop along the ancient Silk Road. On arrival, check in to your hotel and enjoy a free evening to relax or take a first wander through this historic desert oasis at your own pace.

Today’s highlight is the UNESCO-listed Mogao Caves, a sprawling network of 735 grottoes filled with Buddhist statues, vibrant murals, and ancient manuscripts created by monks over more than a thousand years. Wander through this extraordinary cultural treasure and witness the artistry that once flourished along the Silk Road. Afterwards, drive out to Mingsha Mountain, the dramatic sand dunes on the edge of the Gobi Desert. Along the way, stop for a home-cooked lunch with a local family, sampling traditional dishes and enjoying a brief glimpse into daily life. Once at the dunes, marvel at the sweeping desert landscape and the iconic Crescent Lake, a serene oasis cradled by the golden sand. Take the chance to ride a camel across the towering dunes, feel the desert breeze, and capture unforgettable photos as the sun casts long shadows over the rolling sands. In the evening, return to your hotel in Dunhuang for a well-deserved rest.

Today we’ll travel by high-speed train to Turpan. On arrival, your local guide will meet you and help settle you into your accommodation, after which the rest of the day is yours to explore the city at your own pace. Turpan, a key hub on the northern Silk Road, is a vibrant Uyghur community with a rich mix of history, culture, and architecture. You might choose to visit the Sugong Tower, the tallest ancient Islamic tower in Xinjiang and a striking example of regional architecture. History enthusiasts can explore the Turpan Museum, which houses fascinating exhibits including the preserved mummies of the region. As evening falls, wander through the lively Xingfu Road Night Market, sampling local delicacies such as the famous whole-roasted lamb and soaking up the vibrant street atmosphere. This is your chance to discover Turpan’s unique blend of Silk Road heritage, Uyghur culture, and culinary delights, all at your own pace.

Today we’ll dive deep into Turpan — from its rich history and dramatic landscapes to the rhythms of daily life. Our journey begins at the ruins of Gaochang, once a bustling trading hub on the Silk Road, where stories of commerce, conquest, and cultural exchange still linger among the ancient walls. Wander through the remnants of temples, city walls, and residential areas, imagining life along this historic desert oasis. At midday, we’ll head to Tuyugou Valley, where a hearty lunch with a local Uyghur family blends regional flavors with warm, traditional hospitality. Afterward, you can try your hand at making traditional Uyghur naan and sample the area’s famous fresh fruits. In the afternoon, continue to explore the picturesque valley, wandering through Uyghur villages and dramatic canyon landscapes to gain a deeper sense of local culture and daily life. On the return journey, make a brief stop at the Flaming Mountains for photos, capturing the striking red sandstone ridges that have inspired legends along the Silk Road.

In the morning, we’ll head to Urumqi Airport for our flight to Kashgar, marking the start of a new chapter in our journey. Upon arrival, your local guide will meet you for transfer to your hotel, where you can check in and settle in. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore at your own pace. Kashgar, perched at the northeastern edge of the Pamir Plateau, is China’s westernmost city and a historic hub on the Silk Road. For over two thousand years, it has been a crossroads of cultures, religions, and trade, where Uyghur traditions thrive alongside bustling markets and vibrant streets. As you wander through the city, you’ll feel the pulse of this unique frontier town — from its ancient mosques and winding alleyways to the colourful bazaars that have drawn travellers for centuries.

At around 10:30 a.m., a day in Kashgar begins at the East Gate of the Old City with the traditional opening ceremony. A lively performance blending song, dance, and storytelling instantly transports you into the rich history of this Silk Road city. Next, we visit the Id Kah Mosque, the largest and most important mosque in Xinjiang. Its grand prayer hall is supported by 140 intricately carved green wooden pillars. If our visit coincides with prayer time, you’ll also have the chance to quietly observe the solemn rhythm of local religious life. Afterwards, “Guli’s Home” welcomes us into a traditional Uyghur courtyard. Here, you can sample dried fruits and herbal tea, enjoy folk music and dance, and share a hearty home-cooked meal — a warm, authentic introduction to Uyghur hospitality and family life. In the afternoon, we explore the high-platform residences of Kashgar, trying our hand at traditional crafts such as clay pottery. Witnessing artisans safeguard skills that have been passed down for generations offers a deeper understanding of the city’s living cultural heritage.

After a leisurely breakfast, we head to Kashgar Airport for our flight to Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. Upon arrival, your private guide will meet you at the airport and escort you to the hotel to settle in and refresh. In the afternoon, we embark on a cultural journey through the highlights of Xinjiang. Our first stop is the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Museum — far more than an ordinary museum, it is a gateway to the entire history of the region. Here, you’ll come face-to-face with national treasures like the Han Dynasty “Five Stars Rise in the East” embroidered arm guard, explore delicate Tang Dynasty silk paintings, and witness millennia-old mummies, experiencing the real pulse of the Silk Road and engaging in a conversation that bridges past and present. As evening falls, the journey reaches its crescendo at the Erdaoqiao International Grand Bazaar, often called the “Window to Central Asia.” This is no ordinary market — it’s a living celebration of folk art and culture. Within its Islamic-inspired architecture, you’ll find an array of handcrafted carpets, finely carved wooden items, and the enchanting melodies of the rawap lute. Immerse yourself in the vibrant Silk Road trading atmosphere and take home a piece of its artistry — a lasting memory of your journey.

Today we spend the day exploring the enchanting Tianshan Heavenly Lake, a high-altitude gem often likened to the mythical Jade Pool. About a two-hour drive brings us to this alpine paradise, where emerald-green waters mirror the snow-capped Bogda Peak and towering spruces frame the tranquil, pristine scenery. You can choose to glide across the clear, icy waters in a small boat, embraced by the surrounding mountains, or stroll along the lakeside boardwalk, breathing in the crisp air and letting each view become a lasting memory. Beyond its natural beauty, the lake is steeped in legend as the legendary home of the Queen Mother of the West, offering both wonder and a sense of mythic history to immerse yourself in.
