As the mighty Bökh wrestlers, clad in colorful ‘Zalgas’, stride into the arena, the entire crowd is instantly electrified. ‘Zalgas’ are colorful silk rings worn around the necks of Bökh wrestlers, with each ribbon representing a victory. For Bökh wrestlers on the steppe, the ‘Zalgas’ is the highest honor, symbolizing strength and bravery.
Horse Racing: The Soul of the Steppe
If Bökh showcases strength, then horse racing is the perfect combination of speed and harmony, a true reflection of the ‘people on horseback’.
Horse racing is divided into two types: speed races and riding races. In speed races, horses compete on sheer burst of power—the first to cross the finish line wins. Riding races, on the other hand, emphasize overall rhythm and stability. Riders must skillfully guide their horses, showcasing the grace and composure of the people on horseback.
Archery: The Way of Precision
The most thrilling event at Naadam is undoubtedly mounted archery.
Riders gallop at full speed, shooting arrows from their charging horses—a feat that requires extraordinary skill and exceptional composure. As the arrow hits the bullseye, the crowd holding their breath erupts instantly, letting out cheers of awe.
This is the true hallmark skill of the steppe people! For centuries, their ancestors have strung bows on horseback, defending their homeland while riding at full speed. Today, every arrow shot tells the story of the glory and pride of a people on horseback.
3. Naadam Experience Guide
Best Time and Location
Naadam is held in many places, but if you want to experience the purest, most thrilling, and most authentic embodiment of the Mongol Naadam spirit, there is only one place—Xilin Gol.
The Naadam Festival on the Xilin Gol Grasslands is usually held around July 10–15 each year, with exact dates subject to slight adjustments depending on the weather and pasture conditions. This time of year is the most beautiful season on the grasslands, and also when the cattle and sheep are at their fattest and healthiest.
Authentic Steppe Life
The charm of Naadam extends far beyond the arena.
Surrounding the arena is a temporary city made up of countless white yurts. You will see young women wearing colorful Mongolian robes, sparkling brilliantly under the sunlight.
Walking among the yurts, you may be warmly invited by the hosts to step inside, where they will serve you steaming cups of milk tea. That savory and rich milk tea is a unique Mongolian delicacy, representing the simplest form of hospitality on the grasslands.
At dusk, as the bonfires are lit and the haunting melodies of the morin khuur fill the air, people form a circle, join hands, and begin the traditional Andai dance. As night falls and you look up, the sky is filled with stars that seem within reach.
