The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore at your own pace: head up to Hongshan Park for sweeping views towards the snow-capped Bogda Peak, step into the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Museum to trace the region’s rich Silk Road history, or dive into the lively lanes of the Erdaoqiao Grand Bazaar. Here, the smoky aroma of freshly baked samsa, the richness of hand-pulled pilaf and the sweetness of handmade ice cream offer a delicious first taste of Xinjiang’s vibrant food culture.

Day2Urumchi / Altay

Today we set out from Urumqi towards the storybook town of Burqin, heading north on a journey where the road itself becomes part of the adventure. Wind turbines rise from the Gobi, the landscape slowly gives way to open plains, and the winding Irtysh River appears and disappears alongside us—proof that some of the best scenery really is found along the way. By late afternoon, we arrive at Colorful Beach (Wucaitan) just in time for sunset, when rust-red Danxia formations, deep blue river waters and golden poplar forests combine to create a scene that feels like a painting set alight. This evening, reward yourself with a local cold-water fish feast, sampling regional specialties such as northern pike and five-dao black—letting the fresh, clean flavours of Northern Xinjiang linger long after the day ends.

Early this morning, we set out for Kanas. Keep your eyes on the window rather than dozing off—the landscape unfolds like a living painting, shifting from the wide-open Gobi to the golden, glossy Siberian taiga. You’ll know instantly: the kingdom of autumn has arrived. By afternoon, when the sunlight softens, we embark on an unforgettable hike through the Three Bays. Follow the wooden boardwalk from the mist-shrouded Shenxian Bay, wander to the crescent-shaped Moon Bay nestled in the forest, and finally reach the dragon-like Wolong Bay. Every step crunches softly on fallen leaves, surrounded by autumn colours ablaze, fully immersing you in this natural masterpiece. If weather and energy permit, you can climb to the Guanyutai Viewing Platform. From here, the Kanas River winds like a sapphire ribbon through endless golden forests, framed by the snow-capped peaks of the Altay Mountains—every grand vision of autumn is brought vividly to life. Tonight, we stay in traditional Tuva wooden houses in the old Kanas village, where under a canopy of stars, you can feel the raw, authentic pulse of this extraordinary land.

Today we drive to Hemu Village, often called “God’s Reserved Land.” The scenery outside gradually shifts from sweeping mountain panoramas to tranquil, pastoral landscapes. In the afternoon, we explore Hemu in the most local way—on horseback. Riding through birch forests and open meadows, we ascend to a hillside viewpoint and take in the full village panorama: golden treetops, earthy wooden houses, the sapphire Hemu River, and snow-capped peaks in the distance—an unforgettable autumn tableau. As evening falls, you can climb to the Harden Observation Deck to witness a spectacular finale: the sunset gilds the distant mountains, smoke rises from village chimneys, and a soft mist drifts through the valley, blending into a scene that feels like a living painting. Take time to wander the village, sit by the river, watch locals tending horses or chopping wood, and listen to the wind rustle through the birch trees. Here, time seems to slow, allowing you to experience the authentic rhythm and everyday life of Northern Xinjiang—the quiet, vivid soul that makes Hemu truly unforgettable.

After breakfast, we farewell the tranquil village of Hemu and set out for the vast, otherworldly landscapes of Urho Ghost City, often described as a Yadan wilderness — a place that captures the raw, haunting spirit of China’s far west. We explore during the golden hour before sunset, when low light transforms the landscape. Pale, austere rock formations glow with warmth as long shadows stretch across ridges and ravines, and colours shift from dusty ochre to deep crimson and gold. Wind hums through the sculpted stone, and in this play of light and shadow, time seems to slow as the desert’s ancient story unfolds. You can choose to take it easy on the small sightseeing train, gliding between the towering, beast-like formations and stopping at the best viewpoints for unhurried photos. Or find your own perfect vantage point, linger in stillness, and watch as the sun gradually gilds the land — moment by moment — until daylight fades and the first stars begin to appear.

This morning, we set off on another long journey to Sailimu Lake. This isn’t just any lake — it’s a gift from nature, where moisture from the distant Atlantic condenses at the foot of the Tianshan Mountains. The water shimmers in a pure, intense blue, shifting with the light and weather from deep sapphire to vivid cerulean, and even to a dreamlike Tiffany blue. Snow-capped peaks on the far shore, rolling grasslands, and stands of spruce form a 360-degree, all-encompassing natural canvas. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy. Chase the sunset as it turns the mountains, the lake, and your own shadow golden. When night falls, step outside — the Milky Way will stretch across the sky, reflecting perfectly on the mirror-like water. Tomorrow morning, we’ll meet the lake in a more intimate way: cycling around its shores. For now, take your time and soak in the freedom and serenity of arrival.

Golden autumn meadows frame the deep blue water, while snow-capped peaks reflect silently on the mirror-like surface — as if you’re pedaling through a three-dimensional painting. In the afternoon, we head to Kazanqi in Yining — a “living open-air museum” of Uyghur culture. As the saying goes, “You haven’t seen the beauty of Xinjiang until you’ve been to Ili,” and Kazanqi is one of the best-preserved traditional Uyghur streets in the region. Slow down, wander the twisting alleys, and discover the heart-stopping “Ili blue” gates, where colour and light create a poetic visual symphony. Don’t miss a scoop of handcrafted ice cream from a century-old shop, or step into a local teahouse to experience a long, warm Uyghur afternoon over tea and conversation. For a more local culinary experience, head to Jiefang Road or Hongqi Road before evening. Here, longtime favourite restaurants serve everything from smoky grilled meats to hearty hand-pulled noodles — a feast of Xinjiang flavours in the midst of bustling local life.

Day8Yining / Karamay

Today, we travel along the legendary Duku Highway, often hailed as one of China’s most beautiful roads. This is far more than a drive — it’s a powerful encounter with nature. Leaving the lush Ili River Valley behind, we follow a series of dramatic switchbacks, climbing steadily toward the Haxilegen Mountain Pass at nearly 3400 metres above sea level. Under crisp autumn skies, snow-dusted peaks rise above stark rock faces, creating a scene that feels both raw and almost sacred. As the elevation changes, so does the landscape beyond the window — golden meadows and dark spruce forests give way to red-hued cliffs. Looking back, the road clings to the cliffs like a ribbon, unfolding an epic autumn story of resilience and vast wilderness. We spend the night in Dushanzi before returning to Urumqi tomorrow.

Day9Karamay / Urumchi

This morning, we explore the Dushanzi Grand Canyon. Standing at the canyon’s edge, you’ll witness the Anjihai River carving this deep fissure across the flat landscape over millions of years. Layers of ochre cliffs and crisscrossing ravines reveal a texture that feels like the very pulse of the Earth in the morning light. It’s a stark contrast to the snowy mountain we traversed yesterday — a silent, powerful reminder of nature’s enduring strength. After the visit, we’ll head back to Urumqi, marking the official end of your journey through Xinjiang’s spectacular landscapes.
