Medieval Wild Apricot Blossoms Blanket the Hills of Yili, Xinjiang in April
As winter fades, April brings the most romantic time of the year to the Yili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang, when apricot blossoms burst into bloom across the hills.
1. A Sea of Blossoms with a Thousand Years of History
These apricot trees are not cultivated by humans, but belong to a primitive wild apricot forest that has survived since the Middle Ages, with origins tracing back over a thousand years to the Silk Road. Year after year, they have witnessed passing caravan traders, nomadic migrations, and the rise and fall of numerous dynasties.
By mid-April, as the ice and snow melt, the entire valley is set ablaze with the pink of wild apricot blossoms. The magnificence of the wild apricot forest lies not in a single tree, but in the mass blooming that blankets the entire hillside. From the foot of the mountain to the ridgeline, the pink and white apricot blossoms ripple along the contours of the land, fully displaying their untamed beauty.
2. The Embodiment of Romance
Unlike Japan’s cherry blossoms, the apricot blossoms here are beautiful in a natural way, with not a trace of artificial embellishment.
There are no fences, no planned paths, not even defined boundaries—only your feet, wandering freely under the guidance of your own heart. Stepping on the ground woven with wild grass and fallen petals, breathing in the fragrant air of apricot blossoms, in this moment, romance takes tangible form.
But the time for romance is limited, as the wild apricot blossoms have a very short flowering period, usually lasting only 7 to 10 days. A spring shower or a gust of wind can cause the sea of blossoms to wither overnight. If you miss it, you’ll have to wait another year.
3. Recommended Core Viewing Areas
The prime viewing spots for wild apricot blossoms are mainly concentrated in the following areas:
Tuergen Apricot Blossom Valley
Located in Xinyuan County, it is the largest and most spectacular concentration of wild apricot blossoms in all of Yili, and has been listed by Chinese National Geography as one of “100 Places You Must Visit in Your Lifetime.” The apricot blossoms are distributed vertically along the hillside, creating rich visual layers and making it the easiest place to capture the “sea of clouds and flowers” effect.

Daxigou Wild Apricot Forest
Located in Huocheng County, it attracts fewer visitors because its scenery is less grand than that of Tuergen. This area features not only wild apricot blossoms, but also the flowers of wild plums, wild apples, and wild walnuts, making it ideal for visitors who wish to avoid crowds and enjoy a greater variety of wild blooms.
Flowering period reference: Mid to late April (usually 3–5 days later than Tuergen). If you miss the flowering season in Tuergen, you can come here to make up for it—or enjoy the apricot blossoms in both places.
Hillsides Around Nalati
Here, wild apricot blossoms are scattered across the grassland hillsides, making it ideal for capturing them alongside the steppe or snow-capped mountains. However, finding the best vantage points requires self-driving, which comes with a certain level of difficulty for photography.

If you want to see the hillsides blanketed in a sea of blossoms, be sure to arrive during the peak blooming period. In fact, the weather in Xinjiang varies from year to year, so it’s best to arrive a few days in advance. This way, you won’t miss the peak bloom and can also experience the full progression from the first blossoms to the falling petals.
